I haven't been able to paint for a couple of months due to family obligations and a heavy work schedule. It felt so good to paint again tonight. I just love painting with oils so much!!

I just returned from a workshop with Stanley Bielen at Art New England in Bennington VT. This was my second year studying with him and, once again, I learned alot and felt that I took a forward direction in my painting. There is a lot of talent in his classes which is inspiring as well.  It is so interesting to see how everyone's work develops over a week of intensive painting and how everyone has their own individual thumbprint.

Here are a few of the paintings I did in the workshop:

It is hard to see in this photo, but I started to break up colors nicely in the flower - it is blocks of color which have subtle changes in tone and if I can remember to paint like this, I will be very happy.

I am also now starting with oil underneath and these paintings have much more dimension and luminosity.

In this painting, I really started to break up the image in larger blocks of color and kept my stroke simple, didn't "overpaint". I think it is a successful little painting - a good jumping off point.

On the last day of class I painted zinnias that I picked from my cousin's garden where we were staying in Williamstown, MA. This is the direction I would like to follow - this is more "me" than what I have been painting - more contemporary, graphic - starting to break up the shapes and work in simpler blocks of color, less finicky, less detail, looser with simpler lines. We'll see what happens moving forward but I momentarily found a nice "zone" to work in.

48 hours process

8"x8" on board

This is how I am painting as of late, I start on an acrylic ground and roughly draw in the shapes and give myself a "map" of where I need to go.

Catching Up

8"x8" oils on board

I am excited about this painting and in many ways feel like it is a new beginning. I kept my strokes loose throughout and the brushwork and style is consistent. I also am happy with the color and if you look at the detail image, happy with the subtle transitions. This painting feels like a breakthrough. I am painting at least once a week (hard to do more as I continue to work full time as an illustrator), sometimes I paint twice a week, but I see that this is starting to pay off.

Memorial Day

I really laid the oils on thick in this painting - it is really buttery and satisfying. I also like all of the whites I was able to accomplish.

Details from a recent painting. The painting as a whole was unsuccessful, but there were some interesting moments that worked that I want to hold onto.

Holiday Flowers

8"x8" oils on board
It is Easter weekend and Passover as well, lots of family and friend get togethers and beautiful flowers everywhere. I loved the subtle colors in these flowers and when I placed it on a pale sheet of paper, the shadows in the glass lit up with colorful shades of purple and pink.

Sunflower and Ranunculus

I love painting ranunculus - thank you Trader Joe's for carrying them! I bought my white paint in a jar this week and it was much thicker than the tube. I got some beautiful textures in this painting as a result.

Trader Joe's has such a great assortment of flowers and when spring hits they stock ranunculus - which are so lovely and so much fun to paint.
